ODOUR CONTROL UNIT
REFURBISHMENT AND UPGRADE
WASTEWATER

Enhanced odour control is now in place at United Utilities’ Birkenhead wastewater treatment works, following a successful refurbishment project delivered by ERG Hygrade in collaboration with Amey.

The original odour control system, supplied and installed by ERG Hygrade in 2006 as part of a £2.1 million contract with Byzak Limited (now part of the Amey Group), has served the site for nearly two decades. This latest upgrade reflects both the durability of the original design and ERG Hygrade’s ongoing commitment to long-term support and performance optimisation.

As part of the refurbishment, all stainless steel isolation and non-return dampers were replaced with corrosion-resistant GRP units, designed and tested in-house by ERG Hygrade. The chemical dosing system was also modernised, with new sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite dosing cabinets fitted with digital dosing pumps for improved control and reliability. These cabinets were fully assembled at ERG Hygrade’s manufacturing facility, complete with new pipework, pulsation dampeners, calibration tubes and valves.

The project also involved removing the existing carbon bed, adding a full-diameter roof flange for easier future access, and replacing the internal stainless-steel perforated cages.

Crucially, the entire programme was completed with minimal disruption to the plant’s operation, a key priority for United Utilities, ensuring continued odour control performance throughout the works.
